Panzerschreck #8
The Summer 2002 edition of Panzerschreck is now available. Issue #8 contains the usual mix of wargame articles and games, and is sure to please. Besides the standard columns, we have wargame variants covering Eastern Front Solitaire (Omega), London's Burning (AH), and Inchon (SimCan), an Interview with Charles Vasey, a new scenario and variant analysis for Retro, an historical article covering the subject of this issue's main game, and consolidated errata (one page) for issues 1-7.
The main issue game is St. George's Valour: The British Raid on Zeebrugge, 1918, designed by Paul Rohrbaugh. SGV is a solitaire game, pitting the raiding British (the player), against the defending Germans (game system). The game comes complete with an 8.5 x 11 cardstock map, 168 color counters (which must be mounted and cut), game tables, British and German ship manifests, and rules. The object of the game is to guide your invading ships into the well guarded harbor, drop off
commandos, and try and scuttle one of your "block ships" in the harbor/canal entrance to deny access to German U-Boats. Counter types include commandos, German infantry, individual heroes and leaders, and an assortment of naval vessels. (See scan below.) Churchill called this raid one of the finest feats of arms during the Great War. Can you do as well?
The second issue game is called The Fall of Rohm, and is a simple, abstract, solitaire political game set in 1934 Nazi Germany. President Hindenburg is ill, and Chancellor Hitler wants to combine the roles of both offices when the old general dies. But to do this, he needs the approval of the army leadership, who want something in return for their support. Ernst Rohm, the leader of the SA, heads a two million man "army" that is a preceived threat to the army. The player--in the role of Hitler's party leadership--must secure a smooth transition to power when the time comes. In real life, this meant the Night of the Long Knives, and the elimination of Rohm. In game terms, this is uaually a balancing act between keeping the various factions of the country satisfied. Fall of Rohm comes with a small cardstock map, several color counters, and rules. Random events are generated by a deck of ordinary playing cards (not included). Playing time is around ten minutes.
This issue's Mini-Sim game is called Goring's War. It is a simple two-player game of single plane air-to-air combat set during the Battle of Britain. The game comes with a Dogfight Display, plane counters (Spitfires, Hurricanes, Defiants, Me-109s, Me-100s, and Ju-87s), and rules. As with all Panzerschreck Mini-Sims, components are part of the magazine, and must be photocopied before play. A deck of ordinary playing cards is used during play. Play is fast, furious, and fun.
Panzerschreck #8 is 56 pages (plus covers and game inserts). You can order it directly from Minden Games.
